Brijrama Palace- the Labour of Love
Brijrama Palace our flagship property is located on the peaceful banks of the Darbhanga Ghat, Brijrama Palace is one of the oldest structures in Varanasi. Initially known as the Darbhanga Ghat, the awe-inspiring Brijrama hotel is known for its architecture and design that is directly influenced by the erstwhile ruling Maratha dynasty. The 208-year old palace is a perfect place to enjoy a regal holiday away from the chaos of the city. Overlooking the Ganges, Brijrama Palace is close to the popular Dashashwamedh Ghat, which adds to its uniqueness and grandeur.
One of the oldest landmarks in Varanasi, Brijrama Palace dates to the year 1812. The Royal House of Nagpur, which was greatly influenced by the Maratha architecture, built the Brijrama Palace. The breath-takingly beautiful palace was originally designed to serve as a fort. In the early 19th century, Maharaja Saheb of Darbhanga acquired the fort and renamed it as the famous ‘Darbhanga Mahal’. The stunning elements of Greek architecture were incorporated by the Maharaja Saheb of Darbhanga. The Darbhanga crest has a combination of Greek and Indian symbols- a Gangetic freshwater dolphin in a flying position supported by a Greek laurel stem.
Birth of BrijRama
In 1996, the Palace was bought by Shri Arvind Kumar ji and Shri Birendra Kumar Ji from the Maharani of Darbhanga. The restoration of the palace started thereafter, and has been a labour of love by our Shri Arvind Kumar and, as a tribute, it has been named after his parents Shri Brijpal Das ji and Smt. Rama Devi ji; hence the name ‘Brijrama Palace’. After a lot of painstaking restoration efforts, we could realize our dream of building a palace that is royal, luxurious and cultural. Every part of the palace is meticulously designed and has a story to tell. The Palace gives a taste of history, culture and traditions to the patrons who visit us from every corner of the world.
